Obviously the file I have for the business card is business card-sized, and I’ve never designed anything the size of the banner. Should I create a new file that is that size? Or is there a work around it?

Lossy Compression Image Quality

What Lossy Means

Lossy vs Lossless: Lossy compression discards some image information to reduce size; lossless preserves all original data. “png is compressed but is lossless compression, so when decompressed for display is exactly identical to the original image.”

Visual vs Technical: High-quality lossy images can be “indistinguishable to the human observer” but lack data for heavy edits. “So overall, from a distance, a very high quality JPEG would be indistinguishable to the human observer, but internally, there is less data to work with should you try to change exposure/highlights/shadows…”
Common Artifacts And When They Appear

Blocking and Banding: Lossy transforms remove high frequencies and can create blocky artifacts or banding in smooth areas. “JPEG discards extremely high frequencies… A standard/medium quality JPEG would show obvious compression artifacts… areas of a single solid color with no detail, especially around dark areas.”

Invented or Altered Detail: Generative ML methods can hallucinate realistic-looking details, breaking authenticity. “SD doesn’t care about that, and will happily invent realistic looking fictions inside of your image.”

Generation Loss: Re-saving lossy files can accumulate artifacts; visual differences may be subtle and require close inspection. “The grayscale image is an ‘amplified’ difference map. If it wasn’t amplified, the whole image would be nearly black… you can’t really see the difference in the two original photos unless you look very closely.”
Measuring Quality

Objective Metrics: Use PSNR/SSIM to quantify quality vs subjective judgment. “You can use objective measurements like PSNR or SSIM to quantify it. Then you can… plot curves of how quality varies with compression ratio…”

Subjectivity Matters: Perceptual acceptability depends on image type and viewing conditions. “‘Is 99% compression good’ is unanswerable by itself. It depends on what kind of images you’re compressing, and how good the compressed quality is.”
Practical Tips To Preserve Visual Quality

Resize First: Lowering resolution often yields better perceptual savings than aggressive quality reduction. “If you want to compress JPEGs better, you can: 1. Resize to a lower resolution.”

Adjust JPEG Settings: Use reasonable quality factor and chroma subsampling for better trade-offs. “Save the JPEG with lower quality factor, e.g. 88 or so… Save the JPEG with chroma subsampling, e.g. 4:2:0 instead of 4:4:4.”

Use Modern Codecs: Newer codecs can outperform JPEG; compare against AVIF/WEBP/JXL for your use case. “Show me it being more efficient than AVIF and then that’s more significant.”

Avoid Bad Combinations: Palette reduction + dithering + JPEG is usually a poor strategy; pair techniques appropriately. “palette reduction + dithering + JPEG is flawed compression strategy. JPEG’s lossy representation is geared for locally smooth content, but reducing the palette tends to create sharp edges…”

High-Resolution Uploads For Web Platforms: Some sites resample aggressively; use higher-res and zoomed-in crops to retain perceived detail. “High resolution is essential… anything under 1360w is too small… Zoom your product within an inch of its life.”
Tradeoffs & Risks

Compression vs Authenticity: Some algorithms prioritize pleasing visuals over fidelity, which can be problematic for critical images (documents, evidence). “SD doesn’t care about that, and will happily invent realistic looking fictions inside of your image.”

Model/Decoder Overhead: ML-based approaches may require large models and are slow; include model size when claiming compression gains. “If they’re going to try to call this compression, then they should be forced to include the size of the model in the compression ratio.”

Use Case Determines Acceptability: For editing flexibility or archival, lossless or higher-quality settings are preferable. “The idea of RAW is that you are recording raw data from the sensor so you can manipulate the data with more control vs JPEG which has compressed the sensor data.”

⏎

Standard Poster Sizes sizes I do freelance work as a graphic designer, and I was doing a business card of … Continue reading Standard Poster Sizes

["post-81","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
